This is a work I completed around 2003 for my Dad. It shows Noah’s Ark from an aerial perspective. From the top left, you can see the water canopy referred to in scripture as ‘the waters above’ crashing down after having been disrupted by all of the activity caused by the breaking up of the fountains of the deep. Noah’s Ark is seen in the top right quadrant of the image, as a smallish floating box. As your eyes move clockwise, You see flashes of lightning and more water coming down from the canopy.
Since Dale Terbush was one of my Dad’s favorite artists, I completed the work in a style that attempted to mimic the surrealism of his paintings. I tried to do this by laying down gradients of color first, followed by essentially drawing over the gradation with a ‘dry brush’ acrylic, varying the color along the outlines of the work.
Another thing I attempted to do was create depth through having the dark clouds in the immediate foreground, contrasting the color and keeping the tonal levels intact via high contrast.
